What Is Semaglutide & How Does It Work?

Semaglutide is an FDA-approved treatment that was primarily used to treat diabetes. Semaglutide is part of a group of medications that are classified as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists or GLP-1 RAs. What this means is that Semaglutide mimics a naturally occurring hormone known as GLP-1. This hormone is produced in our bodies when we eat food and is responsible for a variety of different functions. For example, GLP-1 can suppress appetite because the brain will signal us that we are full after GLP-1 levels increase. It can also increase the production of insulin which lowers blood sugar. It also plays a role in how our bodies metabolize the food we eat. Altogether, Semaglutide works by increasing our bodies’ response to eating so that you will feel full faster and longer, and so you will have a higher metabolism. Initially this medicine was given to patients with diabetes to help improve insulin and blood sugar levels but was later studied in its relationship to weight loss and healthy lifestyles.

How Effective is Semaglutide?

A double-blind study was performed with Semaglutide that involved two groups of adults. Both groups made significant changes to their lifestyle regarding diet and exercise. One group also received Semaglutide injections on a weekly basis. Over the course of the study period (about two months) the group that was dieting and exercising without Semaglutide lost an average of just over 2% body fat. The group that was dieting and exercising with weekly Semaglutide injections lost an average of over 14% of their body fat in the same time period. The conclusion of this study was that weekly Semaglutide injections combined with a healthy diet and exercise program led to significantly larger weight loss results. In a sense, Semaglutide works as a companion to diet and exercise, helping people get the most out of a healthy lifestyle by boosting their metabolisms and suppressing appetites.

How Do I Get Started With Semaglutide Treatments?

In order to get started with Semaglutide treatments you need to work with a local provider. First and foremost you need to have a consultation to make sure Semaglutide is right for you. Lab works is also done to help choose the correct dosage for your treatment. After that, patients either return weekly to their provider for their injections. Or handle their injections at home themselves. After a few months of injections, patients dosages are usually decreased a little at a time to prevent a drastic change in hormone balance.
